What is a resume and why is it so important?

A resume is an opportunity for you to present your best qualities to an employer or college the way you want to be seen, in other words, sell yourself on paper.  It is a way for the interviewer to know who you are.  The resume is a personal, individual summary of your background, experience, education, training and skills.  It is a way to compare your specific qualifications to those of other candidates.

The resume is expected for almost all types of jobs and also should be included with college applications and scholarship applications.  The resume allows you to have all of the facts at your fingertips and will eliminate fumbling for dates and significant facts.

There are three types of resumes.  The first is chronological which lists experience in reverse order.  The focus is on your work experience.  This would best be used for those of you applying for jobs, especially one in the same or similar field.  The second is functional which highlights your best skills and downplays work experience.  This would be the type of resume you would use to send off to colleges and use for scholarships, etc.  The last type of resume is a combination resume.  This type combines the best of chronological and functional.  This kind of resume takes a little longer to write but allows for more versatility.
