Your child will be bringing home a collection of spelling words on a weekly basis, which will be introduced to them in school. At least three times a week, when spelling homework is assigned, your child is expected to practice a spelling activity with the weekly list of words. This will ensure that these words and the spelling principles they represent are mastered. The spelling activities are listed below, however they have also been modeled and practiced in school, so your child can teach you how to do the activities with them. The following are spelling activities that your child will need to complete for homework: Regular Sort – the words can be sorted into categories like your child practiced in school. You and your child can discuss why the words are sorted in that manner, and any spelling or word patterns that may be present. Please write the words in the notebook the same way they appear in the sort, on a blank page in the notebook. Blind (No Peek) Sort – a word from each category can be laid down as a heading and the rest of the words can be read aloud. As someone reads the words aloud, your child should indicate which heading the word belongs under without looking at the word. Please write the words in the notebook the same way they appear in the sort, on a blank page in the notebook. Alphabetical Order – the words can be written in alphabetical order on a page in the notebook. Sentences – your child can select 10 of the words and write them in meaningful sentences. Please circle the spelling word used in each sentence. Pyramid Words – your child can write each spelling word in the shape of a pyramid. The first line is the first letter of the word, and beneath that the first two letters of the word, and so on. Please see the example below. Spelling word – about a Rainbow Words – your child can write each spelling word, and then trace it at least five times in five different colors with pens, crayons, or markers.
