Vocabulary Term for the week: Middle Passage = the inhumane part of the triangular trade, shipping enslaved Africans to the West Indies.

Theme for the week: Triangular Trade = a trade route that exchanged goods between the West Indies, the American colonies, and West Africa.

Monday: We started watching “Squanto” in class. Tonight I want you to reflect for a moment about what you’re seeing. How do the Native Americans live? Think of at least two examples of their culture. Now think about the English. How do they live? Think of at least two examples of their culture. If you were transported back in time which group would you prefer to be associated with? Why would you select that group? Please write down your responses to these questions. Make sure you use complete sentences.

Tuesday: You have to read pages 114 & 115 in your textbook! It is wild! Once you’ve read all of the information, write down what you were most surprised, or grossed out about. Feel free to cook using the recipe provided as well or in place of your written response.

Wednesday: Review this week’s vocabulary and theme. Why did the colonists chose to
use slave labor instead of indentured servants? Think about life in colonial times. Which
would you chose to use? Why would you make that choice? You don’t need to write your
response but be prepared to take a side tomorrow in class and defend it.

Thursday Traditional: Read “the Kidnapped Prince” on page 107 of your
textbook. When you are finished, answer ? 1 & 2 in complete sentences.

Alternative Assignment: Go to Google.com. Select images and search “the
Middle Passage”. Select 3 and copy and paste them in an e-mail to me,
lmarotta@ichabodcrane.org, or onto a word document. Then write your response
to the what the images teach you about the middle passage. Al

Friday: I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.

Bonus: How well do you know your family’s heritage? Were your ancestors living in
Colonial America? Trace your family history back as far as you can. There are lots of free
websites that can assist you in this process such as ancestory.com. You can also go the
old fashion route of pen/paper. Ask your parents and other relatives for help.
