Selection Process

National Honor Society
Signum Laudis Chapter

When the National Honor Society was founded in 1921, its objectives were to “create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the nation’s secondary school students”. The purpose of the local chapter at Ichabod Crane is the same; to recognize accomplishments in these four areas while at the same time encouraging further growth in them.

ICC HS National Honor Society Selection Process

1. Eligibility is first determined at the completion of the first semester of the junior year. Seniors are again eligible at the start of their senior year and at the end of the first semester of their senior year.

2. In order to meet the scholastic requirement for membership in National Honor Society, students must obtain a cumulative average of 88% or above. This average is calculated using the weighted system used for class rank. In addition, students must have received no more than four demerits within one year prior to determination of eligibility.

3. All students who meet the scholastic requirement will be notified and given a membership packet.  Students will then be responsible for submitting additional information which demonstrates the qualities of  leadershipcharacter, and service. This information will be in the form of a resume, activity sheets, and confidential letters of recommendation. Students will be required to obtain an advisor, coach, or supervisor’s signature that attests to the student’s participation in all activities, as well as a brief statement indicating the type and level of participation. Any student who wishes to see a copy of the activity sheets used for membership consideration may contact the current National Honor Society advisor through the High School office.

4. The Faculty Council, nominated by current members of the National Honor Society and appointed by the administration, will review all information submitted by students. High School faculty members are invited to submit evaluations, in writing, on any student’s candidacy. All submitted materials will remain confidential. The Faculty Council may wish to meet with a student to clarify any information submitted.

The Faculty Council will be looking for students to demonstrate a high degree of leadership, character, and service both in school and in the community. Students should include information on a variety of activities which show consistent involvement and service to both the school and community throughout their high school years.

5. After reviewing all submitted materials, a vote of the Faculty Council will determine a student’s membership in the National Honor Society. Submission of the required documentation and confidential reference letters does not guarantee selection to the National Honor Society. The decision of the Faculty Council is final.
