Freshman Seminar Community Service Projects

Our first service project was in 2007 when two students taught the 9th and 12th grade students in seminars to crochet. Students learned to crochet baby hats which were donated to the preemie unit at Albany Medical Center.

Our second service project was a knitting class taught by one of our retired teachers. Students were instructed to create squares, which would be used to make blankets. Unfortunately, we did not make enough squares but the majority of the students learned a new craft, which might be useful to them in the future.

Project Linus

This past year's endeavor involved creating no-sew blankets for the nationally recognized Project Linus. Three hundred students from the freshman and senior seminar classes made 130 blankets to be distributed at local hospitals, shelters, social service agencies or anywhere a young person under the age of 18 is in need of a hug. It is our hope to repeat this project for the 2011-2012 school year.

For the second year, students at Ichabod Crane CSD in the Freshman Seminar classes participated in Project Linus, a nationwide organization that distributes handmade no-sew blankets to traumatized or hospitalized teens unable to be home for the holidays. This year ICC students completed 47 blankets. From some of the smaller cuttings the students made fleece scarves which were presented to the Questar students at the high school. Students utilized all the remaining scraps from this project by making cat beds and cat toys that were donated Saturday to Animalkind, Inc. in Hudson, NY.

Funding for this community service project was provided through a grant from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, Kinderhook Central School District Education Foundation Arts and Humanities Fund and a gift from the 2010-2011 ICC High School Student Council.
