Freshman Seminar

Personal/Social/Emotional

Planning for a career begins with identifying interests, abilities, and character qualities.

The first activity the students do in seminar is a lesson on respect, responsibility and teamwork.  Students learn what respect looks like in the classroom and successful teamwork.

Autobiography bingo has students find common interests with classmates.  Our “Me T-shirt” activity reminds students of the importance of following directions while creating a colorful, information packed “t-shirt”. The students are asked to indicate through various means, facts about goals, favorite books, who they would like to be in 10 years, where might they like to live and a word they would like people to say when they hear their name. The end result is a beautifully designed T-shirt made up of information about their interests and character. We end the activity with each person sharing one fact from his or her shirt and asking everyone to listen. One student is then asked to go around the room and tell us what each person has shared. This is also a great way to get to know each other. The “Me T-shirt” activity was brought to seminar by Michele Mannato, School Guidance Counselor, a lesson plan she adapted from a college course.

We also do activities that help students match their personality to careers, develop positive attitudes, teamwork, responsibility and how to get along with others. Discussions include our circle of friends, cliques, and stereotypes, making good decisions, positive character traits, values and more.
