The Reading Programs Opportunities for Mrs. J / Mrs. W’s Students

Reader’s Workshop
 Students work in groups using leveled text and activities by ability
 Books are also selected by student based on interest and reading ability
 Status of each student’s reading progress is recorded
 Reading responses and logs are completed in class
 Interactive read alouds completed
 Reading and activities are completed in class or home. (Books can be used for All Star Readers, book talks, book posters)

Macmillan Anchor Stories
 Required for all ICC fifth grade students
 Students work in large group, small group, pairs, individual as needed
 Specific comprehension, vocabulary, and strategies covered
 Reading / activities are usually completed in class.

All Star Readers’ Club (through library)
 Optional for MHG fifth graders
 October through June
 Three books chosen by student according to each monthly theme
 Read, fill out, sign monthly form
 Completion each month results in special party or rewards
 If all months are completed, student will earn Library Certificate in June

New York State recommends that all students read 25 or more books each school year, appropriate for their level and ability.
