WRITER'S WORKSHOP Writer's Workshop involves a variety of creative writing styles and techniques. A writing piece will be started and, depending on the assignment, could last several weeks, or in the case of “on-demand” writing, might be completed within a time period. This is used in preparation for many timed NYS writing tests. One piece might involve the use of several rough drafts. A rough draft is meant to be rough: not-so-neat, crossed out, and printing is OK. In the beginning of a piece, the creative thought is what counts. The final copy shows the student’s best work after revising and editing and can be completed by hand or the computer. (Computer work should be completed by the student to support keyboarding skills.) All writing pieces will be kept in school. (This includes rough drafts. A final “on-demand” writing piece will be completed in June, to be used as a benchmark sample, kept in their permanent folder, for sixth grade. We also encourage parent involvement. When proofreading with your child at home, indicate errors by using check marks. First, allow your child to proofread independently. If there are still errors, mark a check in the margin of the sentence with the error. Then allow your child to find the error and correct it. Sometimes a little explanation will help to prevent similar errors that might occur in the future. BASIC GRADE FIVE GUIDELINES -Use periods, commas, capitals where needed. -Titles should be properly capitalized and underlined. -INDENT! -Conversation: use quotation marks and commas (reviewed in class) -By the final copy, all spelling is perfect (especially NO EXCUSE words) -All pieces, rough and final, should be labeled with the writer’s name and date. -And please... don't write THE END at the end. We'll know you're done.
