English 12R2

 

English 12R2 is a one-semester course, and focuses on further development of students' reading, writing, listening, speaking and critical thinking, preparing them for college education, vocational training or work. Students will read classic literature from the novel, short story, poetry and drama genres. Students will also complete a comprehensive research project that includes a research paper and a presentation.

Typical works:

  • Siddhartha, by Hermann Hesse
  • The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • Various short stories and poems

Typical assignments:

  • Research project (online and print sources, bibliography, internal citations, proper format, audio-visual presentation)
  • Reading comprehension quizzes
  • Vocabulary context sentences
  • Vocabulary quizzes (spelling, parts of speech, definition, use in a sentence)
  • Journal writing (responses to literature, students' experiences, current events)
  • Literary-response essays
  • Compositions (often on topics related to literature, but focusing on students' experiences)
  • Independent reading project
  • Unit exams
  • Group presentations
