(Oct. 10, 2013) The Ichabod Crane Central School District held the first meeting of its Strategic Planning Committee on Monday, October 7 in the high school library.
The 27-member group of stakeholders comprised of parents, two Board of Education members, staff from each school, district administrators and members of the community will assume a significant role in the development of a long-range strategic plan that will guide the future of the Ichabod Crane Central School District. The plan will include a new mission statement, vision and goals. The committee will ultimately recommend the strategic plan to the Board of Education for its approval.
Superintendent George Zini welcomed committee members and thanked them for the work they were about to embark on for the district. He then introduced Questar III BOCES Assistant Superintendent Andrew DeFeo, who will facilitate the strategic planning process.
“This is your process,” DeFeo told the group. “You will help determine the future and direction the district and community wants to move in. The Board of Education wants to make sure they are representing the work the community wants.”
Committee members introduced each other as part of an ice-breaker exercise and shared their motivation to be part of the planning process. DeFeo explained to the committee that its charge is to develop a strategic plan and how it differs from an operating plan. He led them through several exercises that will help drive the planning process, including an activity in which members were asked to identify what they felt are the necessary characteristics for working as an effective team.
DeFeo discussed the importance of engaging in open and honest discussions and that all opinions will be heard, considered and respected throughout the process. He encouraged members to share the work they’ll do on the committee in an open and accurate manner.
Members were asked to come to the next meeting on October 24 to share their beliefs –what they believe to be the district’s strengths and challenges.
The October 24 and 25 meetings will be held at the McNary Center with the fourth and final meeting November 4 in the high school library.
