Ichabod Crane Art Department

The Ichabod Crane District-wide Art Department offers the students a solid program and a wide range of experiences. This is accomplished by six dedicated art professionals who service the entire district.

In the elementary art program, there is collaboration with the library and classroom teachers to offer meaningful experiences relevant to classroom work such as tessellations for math. Art and science link with posters carefully crafted under the guidance of the art teacher. Students also visit museums for enrichment.

The middle school art program includes an after-school art club for students who are not involved in other activities and enjoy creating, experimenting, and improving their work.

High school art students are offered a variety of classes and many different experiences in art. Outside of school, the art students participate in approximately seven shows per year, including juried exhibitions. Students also enjoy an after-school art club which is active in community service, personal portfolios, and field trips.

Ichabod Crane student portfolio are competitive. Our students have attended top art schools such as Rhode Island School of Design, New York School of Visual Arts, Pratt, FIT, and Massachusetts College of Arts to name a few. Graduates of ICC are now working in the fields of fine arts, art history, industrial design, fashion window display, textile design, graphic arts, film, children's book illustration, art education, and art therapy.

ICHABOD CRANE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MAKE PAPER CRANES FOR JAPAN

March 31, 2011 - On Fri., March 11, a massive earthquake struck Sendai, Japan, resulting in a devastating tsunami that ravaged the coast just 180 miles from Tokyo.  Organizations such as DoSomething.org and StudentsRebuild.org and ArchitectureforHumanity.org suggested that students fold paper cranes to support their Japanese peers.  Cranes are sacred creatures in Japanese culture.  According to legend, anyone who folds a thousand paper cranes will be granted a wish by a crane.

Origami lessons to fold cranes started in the High School Sculpture class and spread to students throughout the building.  By March 30, students at ICHS had folded more than 1300 origami cranes and members of the Art Club volunteered to string the cranes together into 100 crane strands.

The "Ichabod" cranes were sent to Seattle to be woven into an art installation - a symbolic gift from students around the globe to Japanese youth.  These simple yet powerful gestures will trigger a donation from the Bezos Family Foundation - $2 for each crane received - to Architecture for Humanity's reconstruction efforts in Japan. Their goal is to receive 100,000 cranes for a donation of $200,000.  The efforts of  ICHS students will help them to reach their goal.

ICHS ART CLUB'S ANNUAL EMPTY BOWLS SUPPER RAISED $1000 TO BENEFIT THE VALATIE FOOD PANTRY

The Ichabod Crane High School Art Club raised $1000 in donations at its “Empty Bowls” Supper on Thurs., Feb. 3. The club thanks the public for its generous support of the Valatie Food Pantry. Donors enjoyed a delicious simple meal and received a ceramic bowl made by Ichabod Crane students. The bowl serves as a visible reminder that people go to bed hungry every night. The ceramic bowls have been created by members of the Art Club and students in ceramics classes at the High School, along with a group of fifth graders at Martin H. Glynn Elementary. All proceeds from this “Empty Bowls” Supper benefit the Valatie Ecumenical Food Pantry. For more information, contact Laura Cannamela at (518) 758-7577.
