Registration Information - January 2012
In March, the Primary School will be conducting registration and screening for all students entering Kindergarten in September 2012.
In order to enter Kindergarten, a student must be five (5) years of age on or before December 1, 2012.
Parents of eligible students should have already received a letter from the Primary School about the registration process. If you have an eligible child and have NOT received a letter from the Primary School about the registration process, please call the Primary School right away to have your child included in our registration process. Likewise, if you know a neighbor, friend, coworker or relative who has a child eligible for Kindergarten and they have not received a letter, please pass along this notice.
For information, contact Mrs. K. Nichols at 758-7575, Ext. 6002. Thank you for your assistance.

The Student and Parent Handbook was created by the Primary School Shared Decision-Making Team, which includes faculty and parent members. This comprehensive manual contains all the information to help guide parents through the daily routines, procedures, and schedules of the Primary School. Please keep it handy as a resource for any questions that may surface throughout the year.

Location of Third Grade
For 2011-2012, all third grade classes will be located at the Ichabod Crane Primary School. The Primary School will now be a K-3 building. There will be six sections of third grade.
Location within the Primary School
The third grade classrooms will be together in the 200 wing of the Primary School. When you enter through the front doors of the building, you will proceed straight ahead down the 200 corridor (aka “Kindness Way”), past the library to the corner. You will turn the corner to the left, and all six classrooms will be located along the corridor. The room numbers are 210, 211, 212, 213, 214 and 215. These rooms contain interior bathrooms, sinks, water fountains, and coat storage.
Third Grade Teachers
Third Grade Curriculum
The curriculum for third grade will remain the same as it has been; it will also include updates to reflect the appropriate New York State and Common Core Learning Standards for each subject. No significant changes are expected for 2011-12.
For reading and writing, the third grade classes will engage in a balanced approach that includes whole group and small group instruction in reading/writing strategies and skills. Spelling instruction includes use of the “No Excuse” words along with the “Words Their Way” developmental spelling program.
In third grade, mathematics is taught using the District program called “Everyday Mathematics.” Units of study in social studies include world communities: forests, mountains and plains. Science units explore lifecycles of animals and plants, magnets and electricity, and land formations.
Third grade students are required to participate in the New York State Assessments for English-Language Arts (reading and writing) and for mathematics. These assessments are administered in May each year, and results are sent home over the summer.
Third Grade Schedules
The third grade students will participate in weekly art, music, library and physical education classes. We anticipate that the third graders will eat lunch together at one of the currently scheduled lunch periods offered at the Primary School. We also anticipate that recess will be scheduled in two groups; each group will be all third graders.
Third Grade Arrival/Dismissal
Third grade students will follow the same schedule as the other students in the Primary School. They will ride the buses with the K, 1 and 2 students, and will begin and end their day at the same time as the K, 1, and 2 students.
Materials and Texts
Third grade materials, textbooks, library books, classroom furniture and supplies have been relocated from Martin Van Buren and Martin H. Glynn elementary buildings to the Primary School for the third grade classes here. We anticipate that third grade classes will be set up and managed in the same way that they are currently managed in the other buildings.

Development of Class Lists
Class lists will be developed by the second grade teachers and related service teachers along with Principal, Miss Murray. Assignment to a class will be made with teacher input in regard to the need for specific services such as special education, remedial classes or English language development; the match between the teacher and the child; and the overall balance of the class including gender, academic ability levels, social/emotional/ behavioral needs, and mix of students (ie: separation or matching of specific students).
The class list development process is always very challenging; we strive to make the very best placement for each individual student based on our knowledge of the student and his/her needs. Therefore, we ask that parents do not make requests for specific teachers. The faculty has worked diligently to make the very best placement for your child. Teachers' names have been listed on the final report card sent home in June.
