Non-Public School Transportation Requests Due April 1, 2017

(March 1, 2017) Ichabod Crane Central School District has the Requests For Transportation to a “Non-Public School” available to residents who are planning to enroll their children in a NON-PUBLIC SCHOOL for the 2017-2018 school year. However, a child must reside within 15 miles of the non-public school in order to qualify for Ichabod Crane bus transportation from home to school.

Non-Public School Transportation Request forms may be obtained by calling the Transportation Department at 758-7575 or can be downloaded here. Requests must be submitted no later than April 1, 2017. Should a family move into the district after April 1, their request for transportation must be made within 30 days of establishing residency.

A transportation request should be submitted for any child who may possibly attend a non-public school in the fall, even if a definite commitment has not yet been made. The request can always be withdrawn; however, NYS Education Law states a request must be submitted no later than April 1 or transportation may be denied.

Bus Pass Procedures

  • Parents can designate up to two “permanent” AM pick up and two PM drop off locations. These should be established for the entire school year. This will help accommodate families where parents reside in separate households and working families with day care providers or sitters.
  • "Daily" bus passes, except for emergencies (to be approved by the building principal), will be discontinued. This still allows for multiple bus pick up and drop off locations, but on an annually established basis only-not on a weekly or monthly basis. The elimination of daily bus passes will help eliminate student confusion regarding which bus they need to be on and will help ensure students are safely delivered to the correct location. It will also help with the efficiency of the bus runs as they will remain consistent. This is especially important in the case of substitute bus drivers.
  • Bus numbers will be changed to bus letter for Primary School students. There had been some confusion regarding route numbers and bus numbers. Instead of having children focus on numbers, each bus will have a bus letter, “A, B, C, etc,” which will be prominently displayed near the door. This will also allow the buses to line up at the school in alphabetical order and will make it easier for students and staff to quickly and more simply identify a student's bus.

We realize that even "permanent" locations may change over the course of the year, such as when a childcare arrangement changes or a parent changes jobs. In such cases we ask that parents establish the new "permanent" bus pass at least a week in advance, in writing. Verbal requests for such changes will not be accepted.

If you have questions about the latest transportation changes or if you want to review your particular situation, please do not hesitate to contact your school office.

Special Notes from the Transportation Department

Please have your child waiting at the bus stop five (5) minutes prior to the scheduled bus pick-up time.

For the first several days of the school year, you may experience delays.  Certain bus routes may need to be adjusted during the first several weeks of the school year, and your patience is most appreciated.  Please allow time for schedules to become more consistent.

Students are not permitted to ride another bus for any reason unless a note is provided to their school from a parent/guardian stating the reason for the requested exception.  A special bus pass will be issued at the school.

The Transportation Department establishes regular morning and afternoon bus stops for eligible areas.  Students should be picked up and dropped off at these stops. An increase in the number of stops increases the chance of a hazardous situation and decreases the efficiency of the bus route.

If we can assist you in any way during the school year, please do not hesitate to contact the Transportation Department at 518-758-7575.
