On Tuesday, June 16, residents of the Ichabod Crane Central School District approved a $42,382,980 budget for the 2020-2021 school year by a vote of 2,015 (yes) to 1,246 (no).

Due to public health concerns as a result of COVID-19, Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Executive Order No. 202.26. modified the rules under which school districts could conduct annual school board elections and budget votes. Qualified voters could vote by absentee ballot only and the district mailed absentee ballots to all qualified voters with postage-paid return envelopes.

Residents also accepted a proposition to purchase five (5) additional school buses by a vote of 1,862 (yes) to 1,399 (no).

This is a $785,779 (or 1.89%) increase from the 2019-2020 budget and the estimated tax levy increase is 2.57%, which meets the allowable tax levy limit set by New York State.

Residents also elected Elaine Berlin, John Chandler and Kelly Firmbach to the Board of Education. Each seat on the board is for a 3-year term. Ms. Berlin’s term will begin immediately and Mr. Chandler and Ms. Firmbach’s terms will begin on July 1, 2020. Candidate vote counts are below, in the order they appeared on the ballot:

Elaine Berlin: 1,879
John Chandler: 1,646
Tammy Crawford: 1,635
Kelly Firmbach: 1,854
Susan Ramos: 1,166

We thank all the residents who participated in this year’s budget vote and board election by returning their absentee ballots.

PS: Many thanks to our incredible ballot counters who stayed up late last night determining the results and ensuring their accuracy. A special HUGE shout out to our Board Clerk – Ms. Potts – for all her hard work during a very unconventional budget season.
