July 6, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians:

I hope your summer is off to a great start and you are taking some well deserved time to relax. This was an unprecedented school year for Ichabod Crane and for every district across our nation. Now that it’s over I wanted to take a moment to check-in and introduce myself to those who may not already know me.

My name is Suzanne Guntlow and as of July 1, I have the privilege of being the Ichabod Crane Superintendent of Schools. I’ve been a part of the Ichabod community since December 2013 when I started my career here as the Primary School Principal before moving to the Central Office in 2017 where I’ve served as a district-level administrator ever since. After many years and roles, I am honored to find myself in this new leadership position. Thank you to everyone who personally reached out upon hearing of my appointment. Even in a community I’ve always known for its kindness and generosity, your words have been truly touching.

Our school community has seen a lot of change over the last few years with the start of construction on our Capital Improvement Project, administrative turnover and of course the shift to remote learning this past spring. As we prepare for the 2020-2021 school year, we know there are more changes and challenges to come. While I cannot yet guarantee what the start of the year will look like in September, what I can guarantee is my commitment to you, to your children and to a safe learning environment for all.

Over the coming weeks, I will be collaborating and communicating with all district stakeholders – parents/caregivers, staff, teachers, administrators, board members and health and safety officials – to create a safe and effective learning environment for our students to return to this fall. We anticipate guidance on the reopening of schools from the Governor’s Office, the NYS Department of Health and the NYS Education Department. In anticipation of these decisions, we are in the process of creating a School Reopening Task Force and five sub-committees. The sub-committees include Academics, Health & Safety, Operations & Athletics, Social-Emotional Wellness and Communications. In order to gather as much input and feedback as possible, I am asking each of you to complete a survey that is accessible through the link attached here so all voices can be heard. Take the survey at https://forms.gle/mvthWb2uwQSgS5jZ8 Your input is essential and appreciated. Please complete this survey by Thursday, July 9.

I know many of you are anxious about the future, but the recent past has shown that we can quickly band together to support our students when faced with the unexpected. I feel fortunate to be a part of this caring, dedicated school district and am confident that together we will successfully navigate the challenges ahead. Please continue to watch your email and the District website for more information as it becomes available. I hope you have a wonderful, warm and safe summer.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Guntlow
Ichabod Crane Superintendent of Schools
