5th grade just completed their annual Arts in Education residency with artist-photographer Sasha Sicurella.
Now in its sixth year, this six-week program – “O Canada” – offered students the opportunity to explore indigenous Canada, specifically the northern territory of Nunavut, through a variety of creative activities that integrated visual and performing arts.
Each virtual session with Sasha featured discussions, videos, art-making tutorials and interactive activities designed to engage students in critical thinking, problem-solving, visual literacy and cultural awareness.
Creating Inukshuk clay sculptures, learning and writing Inuktitut language, folktale printmaking, soap carving, throat singing and poetry collage reflections brought students closer to understanding the Inuit people and their culture. Many thanks to Sasha for her amazing, creative and culturally educational work with our students during her residency!
