Dear Parent/Guardians of 6-8 Students:
We are more than excited to welcome all of our students back to school and into the building this year. As difficult as last year was, I would definitely say it was a success. A giant ‘thank you’ goes out to all of our teachers and support staff, custodians and maintenance crew, bus drivers, IT team, food service staff and especially you, the parents. Without everyone’s help, we could not have put together the school year that we did.
With that being said, we plan to blow last year out of the water. This year we have planned a k-12 opening theme based on “Unity.” While we will, of course, focus on academics, I am also focused on letting our kids be kids this year. As we all know, mental health is an ongoing concern. Along with some mindfulness activities within our classrooms, we are planning as many fun activities as we can for the kids. Seeing how much they enjoyed the end of the year gave us all a great appreciation for the little things. In addition to our building-level committee brainstorming ideas, I plan on having students join the committees as well. Considering they know better than we do how things are going and what they would like to do, their input is invaluable.
Now on to some housekeeping items…..
This big question that has been on most of your minds is probably, “What is this school year going to look like?” As we plan for our school year, we are following guidance from the CDC, NYS Education Department, and our local Department of Health to make decisions that will ensure that our students are as safe as possible. All of our students will be back in school 5 days a week. We will be following our normal schedule, with an alternating day 1 and day 2. Students will be wearing masks while indoors as they did last year and we will have students sitting 3 feet apart (except in PE, band, chorus and lunch, which will be 6 feet). This will allow us to have all of the students back to school together. When outside, students will not be required to wear masks. For more information, please reivew our Fall Opening Plan.
Open House (Grades 6-8):
Open House will be held on Wednesday, September 15, starting at 6:00 pm. Please stay tuned for more information.
Lockers and Chromebooks:
To answer another important question regarding lockers, we will not be using lockers at the start of the school year, however, students will be allowed to carry their book bags. The teachers will work with the students on a plan that will enable them to bring home as few books as possible. Students will be keeping some books in their classrooms and whatever they can on their Chromebooks. All students will be assigned a Chromebook again this year which they will receive on the first day of school.
New Staff and Classes:
- Business Life Skills: As mentioned in the spring, we have started a new Business Life Skills class that will take the place of FACS. Mr. DeCanio, who is new to the district, will be teaching it. All students in grades 6-8 will take the class, as it will incorporate several things that will assist them in their journey to adulthood. They will learn about technology application, financial health, interpersonal skills and some basics about business. Much of the curriculum came from student input and we will continue to poll the kids on what THEY want to learn about.
- Studio Art: We are excited to be offering an accelerated Studio Art class to our 8th graders. This will allow our art inclined students to showcase their talents and explore a new program, while also receiving HS credit. The class will be taught by Ms. Kapusinsky.
- Social Worker: We are also fortunate to have hired a full time Social Worker for the district. We would like to welcome Ms. Cucura. She will be working in our building two days a week.
- Counseling: Mrs. DeAloe will be joining our counseling staff from the High School. We are excited to have her on board as well!
- ELA: Mrs. Bulan, our long time ELA teacher, has retired this year. We are in the process of hiring a replacement, but she will be missed and we wish her the best of luck in retirement!
SchoolTool Parent Portal:
Now more than ever, we encourage all parents/guardians to sign up for the online SchoolTool Parent Portal. The portal is a web-based program which allows parents/guardians access to their child’s schedule, attendance and grades. Capital Project Update:
- Over the summer the boiler system was updated which included the installation of a large propane tank in front of the building.
- All of the pods (wings) have been completely renovated. This includes the windows, unit ventilators, new built-in cabinetry, walls, floors, ceilings, lighting, etc.
- Both gyms (large gym and small gym) are under renovation and will not be complete until the end of the school year. Phys. Ed. classes will be held outside (weather permitting), in the cafeteria, and in room 500. For this reason, lunch will be held in the classrooms again this year.
- The music rooms have received new instrument storage and also sound proofing.
As mentioned, we are all really excited about the upcoming school year. Despite some challenges we will need to face, I have no doubt that this year will be great. Estimados padres / tutores de estudiantes 6-8:
Estamos más que emocionados de dar la bienvenida a todos nuestros estudiantes a la escuela y al edificio este año. Tan difícil como fue el año pasado, definitivamente diría que fue un éxito. Un gran ‘gracias’ para todos nuestros maestros y personal de apoyo, conserjes y equipo de mantenimiento, conductores de autobuses, equipo de TI, personal de servicio de alimentos y especialmente ustedes, los padres. Sin la ayuda de todos, no hubiéramos podido armar el año escolar que hicimos.
Habiendo dicho eso, este año hemos planeado un tema de apertura de k-12 basado en “Unidad”.
Aunque, por supuesto, nos centraremos en lo académico, yo estoy más enfocado en dejar que nuestros hijos sean niños este año. Como todos sabemos, la salud mental es una gran preocupación. Junto con algunas actividades de atención plena dentro de nuestras aulas, estamos planeando tantas actividades divertidas como podamos para los niños. Ver lo mucho que disfrutaron el fin de año nos dio a todos un gran aprecio por las pequeñas cosas. Además de que el personal presente algunas ideas, planeo tener estudiantes en nuestros comités también.Teniendo en cuenta que saben mejor que nosotros cómo van las cosas y qué les gustaría hacer, sus aportes son invaluables.
Ahora … algunos artículos para el comenzar …
Esta gran pregunta que ha estado en la mayoría de sus mentes es probablemente: “¿Cómo será este año escolar?” Mientras planificamos nuestro año escolar, seguimos la orientación de los CDC, el Departamento de Educación del Estado de Nueva York y nuestro Departamento de Salud local para tomar decisiones que garantizarán que nuestros estudiantes estén lo más seguros posible. Todos nuestros estudiantes regresarán a la escuela 5 días a la semana. Seguiremos nuestro horario normal, alternando el día 1 y el día 2. Los estudiantes llevarán máscaras en el interior como lo hicieron el año pasado y tendremos a los estudiantes sentados a 3 pies de distancia (excepto en educación física, banda, coro y almuerzo, que será de 6 pies). Casillero/a y Chromebooks:
Para responder a otra pregunta importante sobre los casilleros. Nosotros no vamos a utilizar los casilleros en este año escolar, sin embargo, se permitirá que los estudiantes lleven sus mochilas. Los maestros trabajarán con los estudiantes en un plan que les permitirá llevar a casa la menor cantidad de libros posible. Los estudiantes mantendrán algunos libros en sus aulas y todo lo que puedan en sus Chromebooks. A todos los estudiantes se les asignará una Chromebook nuevamente este año que recibirán el primer día de clases.
Nuevo personal y clases:
- Habilidades para la vida empresarial: Como se mencionó en la primavera, hemos comenzado una nueva clase de Habilidades para la vida empresarial que tomará el lugar de FACS. El Sr. DeCanio, quien es nuevo en el distrito, lo estará enseñando. Todos los estudiantes en los grados 6-8 tomarán la clase, ya que incorporará varias cosas que los ayudarán en su viaje hacia la edad adulta. Aprenderán sobre aplicación de tecnología, salud financiera, habilidades interpersonales y algunos conceptos básicos sobre negocios. Gran parte del plan de estudios provino de las opiniones de los estudiantes y continuaremos encuestando a los niños sobre lo que ellos quieren aprender.
- Arte de estudio: Estamos muy contentos de ofrecer una clase de arte de estudio acelerada a nuestros estudiantes de octavo grado. Esto permitirá que nuestros estudiantes inclinados al arte muestren sus talentos y exploren un nuevo programa, al mismo tiempo que reciben crédito de la escuela secundaria. La clase será impartida por la Sra. Kapusinsky.
- Trabajador social: También tenemos la suerte de haber contratado a un Trabajador social de tiempo completo para el distrito. Nos gustaría darle la bienvenida a la Sra. Cucura. Trabajará en nuestro edificio dos días a la semana.
- Consejería: La Sra. DeAloe se unirá a nuestro personal de consejería de la escuela secundaria. ¡Estamos emocionados de tenerla a bordo también!
- ELA: La Sra. Bulan, nuestra maestra de ELA desde hace mucho tiempo, se ha retirado este año. Estamos en el proceso de contratar un reemplazo, pero la extrañaremos y le deseamos la mejor de las suertes en su retiro.

El portal es un programa basado en la web que permite a los padres / tutores acceder al horario, la asistencia y las calificaciones de sus hijos. Actualización del proyecto de capital:
- Durante el verano se actualizó el sistema de calderas, lo que incluyó la instalación de un gran tanque de propano frente al edificio.
- Todas las cápsulas (alas) se han renovado por completo. Esto incluye las ventanas, ventiladores de la unidad, nuevos gabinetes empotrados, paredes, pisos, techos, iluminación, etc.
- Ambos gimnasios (gimnasio grande y gimnasio pequeño) están en renovación y no estarán completos hasta el final del año escolar. Phys. Ed. las clases se llevarán a cabo afuera (si el clima lo permite), en la cafetería y en el salón 500. Por esta razón, el almuerzo se llevará a cabo en los salones nuevamente este año.
- Las salas de música han recibido almacenamiento de nuevos instrumentos y también insonorización.
Como se mencionó, todos estamos realmente entusiasmados con el próximo año escolar. A pesar de algunos desafíos que tendremos que enfrentar, no tengo ninguna duda de que este año será grandioso.
