Superintendent of Schools Suzanne Guntlow today (Oct. 3) announced her plans to retire from the Ichabod Crane Central School District at the end of the 2022-23 academic year. Her retirement will conclude a nearly decade-long tenure in the district, including roles in several leadership positions.
Superintendent Guntlow said that she will stay until the end of the school year to ensure adequate time for a thorough search process for the next superintendent.
“This is one of the hardest decisions I have made in my life,” she said. “I care deeply for all of our students and staff and the district as a whole. It is however time for a change – to seek more balance in my life – to start the next chapter.”
Superintendent Guntlow joined the district in 2013 as the Primary School principal, a position she held for over four years. She then transitioned to the district’s Principal of Curriculum and Instruction and Professional Development – a district-wide post.
In March 2019, she was appointed the assistant superintendent and, over the next few years, stepped in twice for several months each time to serve as acting superintendent. She was appointed as the permanent superintendent on July 1, 2020.
During transitions involving several superintendents, Superintendent Guntlow provided consistency in leadership at critical times, ensuring that the district’s administrators and staff stayed focused on their comprehensive goals and innovative initiatives.
“She’s certainly always stepped up when needed and took ownership of the responsibilities of the leadership role that she was graciously filling,” said Lara Marotta, social studies teacher at the Middle School.
“Being the leader of the district, she never had to be the one with all the answers,” added Marotta, who also holds a leadership role in the Ichabod Crane Teachers Association. “She relied on each staff member for his or her expertise, and respected each person for it.”
Not long after she became the assistant superintendent, district residents approved the $27 million Capital Project, which was just completed during the summer of 2022. Superintendent Guntlow oversaw large portions of the development, design and construction phases of the project.
The project enhanced academic programming, athletics, health and safety, and infrastructure in so many ways, including the creation of the High School’s STEAM Center and the brand new, multi-purpose, premier gym.
Superintendent Guntlow also oversaw the introduction of multiple academic projects, including the Riders Pathway initiative – a district-wide collaborative effort that brought administrative and teacher leaders together to focus on data-driven instruction. This collaborative work resulted in a 95 percent or better graduation rate since 2019.
She was also the district’s top leader during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the district had to transition to remote learning. She worked tirelessly with her staff to ensure that ICC’s students were still receiving a high-quality education during these unprecedented times – all while keeping the health and safety of all of the district’s student and staff top priorities. This included ensuring that all students had access to the technology they needed to participate.
Additionally, she made it a top priority to keep the district community informed as guidance changed and evolved on an almost daily basis. She worked with school administrators, a district task force, local superintendents and the Columbia County Department of Health to create fluid plans, and to make information accessible and understandable to the ICC community – all with a focus on ensuring the health, safety and well-being of all students and staff.
She has always prioritized partnerships, like this one, because collaboration has only propelled the district forward on an innovative, successful trajectory.
“I know we are all in this together for the same simple reason – to ensure that every child in our community receives an equitable and high-quality education,” she said.
Going forward, she said the Board of Education is “committed to a comprehensive and collaborative search” to find a new superintendent, who will align with the district’s mission, and the pillars of Rider Pride, collaboration, diversity and inclusion.
She said the board will soon start that process, which will include gathering input and advice from key stakeholders, including staff, families, and residents throughout the community.
