We celebrated the six new Wall of Fame inductees at a ceremony on Monday evening that brought together more than 100 people at the High School. The inductees’ family members and friends shared stories about the honorees. There were smiles, laughter and tears.
We are so proud to add V. Ron Gabriel, Daralene Jewell, Ron Near, Thomas Rowley, Thomas Saccone and Robert Warrington to our Wall of Fame!
“Each is well-deserving of this honor and their plaques will hang permanently and prominently outside of this auditorium as a testament to their accomplishments and contributions to the Ichabod community – allowing them to inspire future generations of ICC students,” Superintendent Suzanne Guntlow said.
District alumni, former employees, and community members are eligible to be nominated for the Wall of Fame. The Wall of Fame recognizes the contributions of a diverse group of district stakeholders who exemplify the highest standards of ethical conduct and moral character.
In order to be nominated, an application must be submitted that includes a letter by the nominating individual, in addition to at least two letters of recommendation. All submitted documents are carefully reviewed by our selection committee that consists of students, Board of Education members, administrators, staff and community members. Nominees must receive 70% of the committee vote to be selected.
Mr. Gabriel was a math teacher at Ichabod Crane High School for his entire teaching career. He retired after 35 years at the district, where he also coached boy’s bowling and volleyball.
He was described as being not only a great teacher, but a great person. He had an amazing personality that lit up a room. He knew how to make people laugh and made math fun, interesting and challenging for his students. He related to all his students and helped them reach their potential. He loved his job, and he loved working at ICC.
“Ron was quite a presence. With a ready smile, twinkle in his eye, and gift of gab, his story telling captivated his audience.”
He was very involved in the community and knew everyone. He was a well-respected umpire and referee. He was once the President of the NY Baseball Umpires Association and traveled throughout the state teaching both new and old umpires. 
Mrs. Jewell spent her entire 39-year career as an educator at Ichabod Crane – serving as a social studies teacher for 16 years, an administrator for 14 years and as superintendent for nine years. She retired in 2005.
Her other positions included administrative intern, Dean of Students in the High School, High School Assistant Principal, High School Principal, Middle School Principal, CSE Chair, Director of Pupil Personnel Services, and Assistant Superintendent. After her retirement, she was a professor in the School of Education at the University of Albany.
“In her nine years as Superintendent, she brought much needed stability to Ichabod Crane through her understanding of the school culture and allowed staff, students and the community to grow and prosper.”
Mr. Near worked at Ichabod Crane as a High School custodian for 19 years, retiring in June 2020.
He is known by ICC staff, students (past and current) for his countless acts of kindness. The Class of 2004 was the first to award Mr. Near as the Most Appreciated Member of the High School Staff. In the years following, several classes awarded him as the Most Appreciated Member of the High School Staff and two classes dedicated the yearbook to him.
In addition to the yearbook dedication, the Class of 2020 created a Youtube Video, “Near to Us: The Story of a Janitor Who Cared!” One student stated that, “I’ll never forget the impact Mr. Near has had on me, and | believe that if everyone was just a little bit like him, our world would be a much better place.”
Mr. Rowley was an art teacher (for 30 years) and basketball coach (18 years) at Ichabod Crane High School, a leader and role model.
As a teacher and as a coach, he supported and encouraged students for many years. He taught them many valuable lessons. He devoted countless hours, helping his art students develop their talents and inspired them to create.
Every basketball season, he held a team meeting, where he handed out a booklet, “Great Expectations: 3 Short Essays on Team Philosophy.” The topics included team goals, individual roles and playing time. The lessons weren’t only related to art and basketball, but also to life. One of his former athletes used his booklet when she became a coach at ICC – and still uses the lessons she learned from Mr. Rowley as a mother and ICC staffer.
“The ripple effect of his leadership, dedication and ability to teach will live on forever in me and hopefully my former players as well.”
Mr. Saccone is a long-time first responder who graduated from ICC in 2006. He has impacted thousands of lives through his work and volunteerism. He joined the fire services when
he was 16 years old. He is currently 35. He has been an active member of the Niverville Fire Department since the early 2000s and is currently the 1st Assistant Chief.
After joining the fire company, he was hired by the Valatie Rescue Squad (where he works part time). He currently works full time for LifeNet of New York, providing emergency care when people need it the most. He is a skilled flight paramedic at the Albany base, where he provides outstanding patient care and is a team player.
“He often tells (his wife) that he serves his community because on someone’s worst days, no matter if the call is tragic or if it is a simple alarm activation, they need someone.”
Mr. Warrington graduated from ICC in 1965 and was a Navy veteran who was a member of the Ceremonial Guard. Members of this Guard were the escorts for all burials at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as formal Presidential and Military events. This was an honor that he cherished deeply, and even more acutely as he got older.
Bobby was a valued member of Gordy Van Buren’s Soccer and Basketball teams throughout his high school years. He continued to follow Ichabod athletics for years, including texting his niece frequently when our boy’s team won the state championship.
He coached track and field athletes at Ichabod Crane. After retiring, he competed in the Empire State Senior Games, winning numerous silver and gold medals.
“A superb athlete, A fine example of Rider sportsmanship, A proud patriot, reverent to his fellow servicemen, Bob Warrington exemplifies the highest ideals of his Alma Mater.”

El Sr. Rowley fue profesor de arte (durante 30 años) y entrenador de baloncesto (18 años) en la escuela secundaria Ichabod Crane, un líder y un modelo a seguir.

El Sr. Saccone es un socorrista desde hace mucho tiempo que se graduó de ICC en 2006. Ha impactado miles de vidas a través de su trabajo y voluntariado. Se unió a los servicios de bomberos cuando
tenía 16 años. Actualmente tiene 35 años. Ha sido miembro activo del Departamento de Bomberos de Niverville desde principios de la década de 2000 y actualmente es el primer asistente del jefe.
Después de unirse a la compañía de bomberos, fue contratado por Valatie Rescue Squad (donde trabaja a tiempo parcial). Actualmente trabaja a tiempo completo para LifeNet de Nueva York, brindando atención de emergencia cuando las personas más lo necesitan. Es un paramédico de vuelo calificado en la base de Albany, donde brinda una excelente atención al paciente y es un jugador de equipo.
“Muchas veces le dice (a su esposa) que sirve a su comunidad porque en los peores días de alguien, no importa si la llamada es trágica o si es una simple activación de alarma, necesitan a alguien”.
El Sr. Warrington se graduó de ICC en 1965 y era un veterano de la Marina que era miembro de la Guardia Ceremonial. Los miembros de esta Guardia fueron los escoltas de todos los entierros en el Cementerio Nacional de Arlington, así como también en eventos presidenciales y militares formales. Este era un honor que atesoraba profundamente, y aún más a medida que envejecía.
Bobby fue un miembro valioso de los equipos de fútbol y baloncesto de Gordy Van Buren durante sus años de escuela secundaria. Continuó siguiendo el atletismo de Ichabod durante años, incluido el envío de mensajes de texto a su sobrina con frecuencia cuando el equipo de nuestro niño ganó el campeonato estatal.
Entrenó atletas de pista y campo en Ichabod Crane. Después de retirarse, compitió en los Juegos Senior del Empire State, ganando numerosas medallas de plata y oro.
