We are so are excited to announce that Kerry Light, local resident and longtime educator, has been selected to serve as the new Primary School Principal. Her appointment was unanimously approved by the Board of Education on January 13.
Ms. Light has devoted her entire career to education, serving as a teacher, special education leader and principal. She spent 22 years with the Pittsfield Public Schools, including the last 12 years as a primary school principal. Her leadership focuses on collaboration and empowerment, helping to strengthen instructional practices and support the growth of both students and staff.
“I am so excited that Ms. Light will be joining the Ichabod Crane team. Her extensive background is marked by strong, collaborative leadership skills and a deep commitment to educating the whole child,” Superintendent Marie Digirolamo said. “She lives in the community, attended Ichabod Crane schools, so she already knows what it means to be a Rider and I am so excited to welcome her back to ICC.”
Ms. Light is slated to start on or about April 8. Current Interim Principal Deb Berndt will continue serving in her role until Ms. Light begins in April.
Ms. Light, a resident of Valatie, is excited to return to the district where she and many members of her family attended school and continue to have deep roots in the community.
“I am really excited to return to the school community where I grew up, especially the Primary School, where it all began for me,” she said. “I am someone who listens first, leads with clarity and compassion and builds systems that support both students and adults to grow.”
Ms. Light added that she looks forward to meeting students, families and staff to build strong relationships. “During my first few months, my focus will be on listening and learning. I will be present and visible — at car lines and bus arrivals, school events and in classrooms — and will make myself available to anyone in ways that work best for them.”
She also shared that she felt an immediate sense of welcome and joy when she walked back into the Primary School, taking in the vibrant, colorful hallways and the two wings named Kindness Way and Friendship Lane.
She also expressed that she is impressed by the district’s commitment to the whole child, social emotional learning (SEL) and its implementation of research-based curriculum, including CKLA, the Primary School’s literacy program rooted in the science of reading.
“I’m so excited to hear new ideas and insights, to learn what is going well and build upon that so we can continue creating joyful and safe learning environments where every child receives high quality instruction grounded in both heart and skill,” she said.

La Sra. Light ha dedicado toda su carrera a la educación, desempeñándose como maestra, líder en educación especial y directora. Pasó 22 años en las Escuelas Públicas de Pittsfield, incluidos los últimos 12 años como directora de una escuela primaria. La Sra. Light, residente de Valatie, está entusiasmada por regresar al distrito donde ella y muchos miembros de su familia asistieron a la escuela y continúan teniendo profundas raíces en la comunidad.
“Estoy realmente emocionada de regresar a la comunidad escolar donde crecí, especialmente a la Escuela Primaria, donde todo comenzó para mí”, dijo. “Soy una persona que escucha primero, lidera con claridad y compasión y construye sistemas que apoyan el crecimiento tanto de los estudiantes como de los adultos”.
La Sra. Light agregó que espera con entusiasmo conocer a los estudiantes, las familias y el personal para construir relaciones sólidas. “Durante mis primeros meses, mi enfoque estará en escuchar y aprender. Estaré presente y visible —en las filas de autos y la llegada de los autobuses, en los eventos escolares y en las aulas— y me pondré a disposición de todos de las maneras que mejor les funcionen”.
También compartió que sintió de inmediato una sensación de bienvenida y alegría al regresar a la Escuela Primaria, al recorrer los pasillos vibrantes y coloridos y las dos alas llamadas Camino de la Amabilidad y Sendero de la Amistad.
Asimismo, expresó que está impresionada por el compromiso del distrito con el desarrollo integral del niño, el aprendizaje socioemocional (SEL, por sus siglas en inglés) y la implementación de un currículo basado en la investigación, incluido CKLA, el programa de alfabetización de la Escuela Primaria fundamentado en la ciencia de la lectura.
“Estoy muy emocionada de escuchar nuevas ideas y perspectivas, aprender qué está funcionando bien y construir sobre ello para que podamos seguir creando entornos de aprendizaje alegres y seguros donde cada niño reciba una instrucción de alta calidad, basada tanto en el corazón como en la habilidad”, afirmó.
