Dear Ichabod Crane Community,
I am writing to share an important update regarding our school district’s financial condition and the steps we are taking to address it.
As we completed the 2025-26 fiscal year review, we identified significant concerns about the district’s finances. The district has ended two consecutive years with operating deficits, making it necessary to conduct a comprehensive independent review of our financial position and the assumptions supporting the 2026-27 budget.
To support this work, we have assembled a team of experienced independent professionals to thoroughly review the district’s finances. Their work will assess the district’s current financial position, identify the factors that contributed to these deficits, and recommend both immediate and long-term actions to restore long-term fiscal stability. When this review is complete, the findings and corrective actions will be presented publicly to the Board of Education.
To support this effort, Cybil Howard assumed the role of Emergency Interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO) on August 1. Ms. Howard, who previously served as the School Business Official in Taconic Hills CSD, will lead the district’s financial operations while Michael Brennan, School District Leader of Business and Operations, is away from the district.
I know many families will have questions about what this means for the coming school year. At this time, our focus remains on preparing for a successful opening of school and providing students with the high-quality education, programs, and services they deserve while we complete this review. It is too early to determine what additional actions may be necessary, but we are committed to communicating openly as more information becomes available.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as this review is completed and encourage everyone to avoid speculation while the facts are being gathered. Our goal is to ensure that any future decisions are thoughtful, transparent, and in the best interests of our students and the long-term health of the district.
