STATUS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Students in the high school are divided into four grades based on the number of credits they have earned. To graduate, they must earn a minimum of 22 credits in the courses required by the State Education Department.

Grade 9 – Freshmen
These are students who are entering grade 9 for the first time or students who have earned less than five credits in prior years including grade 8 and summer school.

Grade 10 – Sophomores
These are students in their second year of high school who have earned 5 or more credits in prior years including grade 8 and summer school.

Grade 11 – Juniors
These are students in their third year of high school who have earned 10 or more credits in prior years including grade 8 and summer school.

Grade 12 – Seniors
These are students in their fourth year of high school who have earned 15 or more credits in prior years including grade 8 and summer school.

Generally students are advanced at the end of each school year. However, if at the end of a school year, as student has not earned enough credits to move to the next grade, they will not be promoted. These students will be promoted to the next grade as soon as they have earned the proper number of credits. This often occurs after the first semester of the next school year.
