With the aid of virtual reality technology, Capital Project architects (CSArch) showed members of the Ichabod Crane board and district administration around future completed program spaces. Here’s Mr. Shull (High School Principal), Mr. Farley (Middle School Principal), Mr. Brennan (Business Administrator) and Mr. Nelson (Board President) exploring some future spaces in our schools.

(November 7, 2019)

On November 6, we celebrated the completion of one of the first major components of our Capital Project: the connecting access road between the Primary and Middle School.

We commemorated the occasion with a district-wide ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by students, staff/faculty, administrators and board members. Students gathered to watch one of their peers from each grade help cut a ceremonial ribbon stretched across the new road. This was followed by the first official usage of the road by an Ichabod Crane bus and the ICC Marching Band & Color Guard.

This new connecting access road is one of the first major components of the Capital Project to be completed and marks the end of Phase I construction. With this road in place, our buses now have a more efficient (and quicker) route for dropping off and picking up students.*

* During school hours the road is open for buses only and closed to all other traffic. It will be open for all other vehicles and parking after school hours are over and on weekends.

(November 4, 2019)

Paving was moving right along this past weekend on the connecting access road between the Primary and Middle School! The road will be open for our buses in the near future, stay tuned!

View the presentation from our October 30, 2019, Community Forum below. Interim Superintendent Bordick gave this presentation for interested community members to hear and give feedback on the preliminary sequencing plan for Phase II Capital Project construction.

(October 16, 2019)

Interim Superintendent Bordick is holding a Community Forum on October 30 at 6:30 PM in the High School Auditorium so Ichabod Crane parents, guardians and families have an opportunity to give their feedback on the preliminary sequencing plan for Phase II Capital Project construction.

Please share this date with any community members who may be interested in attending.

The sequencing plan addresses the multiple anticipated factors in Phase II construction. It includes a timeline of when specific areas of the schools will be affected by construction and where we’ll temporarily move students & staff in those areas.

(October 11, 2019)

During today’s conference day, Interim Superintendent Bordick presented the preliminary sequencing plan for Phase II Construction to all Ichabod Crane faculty. All the faculty members now have an opportunity to submit their own feedback on the preliminary sequencing plan prior to the final plan submission to the NYS Education Dept. (NYSED) in December 2019.

Capital Project Phase II Planning

An update for the Ichabod Crane community as we plan for Phase II construction in our Capital Improvement Project.

We are currently developing a sequencing plan that addresses the multiple anticipated factors in Phase II construction. This includes a timeline of when specific areas of the schools will be affected by construction and where we’ll temporarily move students & staff in those areas.

Part of this planning process was meeting with several other school districts who completed similarly sized Capital Projects and researching possible temporary offsite learning locations during construction.

District administration visited several potential offsite learning locations and found them unsuitable for our students’ educational needs. Because of this, Interim Superintendent Bordick reported back to the Ichabod Board of Education that offsite student relocation is an unacceptable option during Phase II construction.

Therefore, during our sequence plan development, we’re focusing on what we will do internally in the schools to minimize the effects of Phase II construction on students. Over the next several weeks our administrators, affected staff/faculty, CSArch (Capital Project architects) and Turner Construction will finish a preliminary sequencing plan for the Middle and High School buildings. At this point in time, there is also some minor anticipated impact at the Primary School.

Currently, Mr. Bordick is welcoming recommendations from all Ichabod faculty to strengthen and improve the preliminary sequencing plan. In the first week of October, Mr. Bordick will then present this preliminary plan to the board and faculty.

Additionally, Mr. Bordick is holding a Community Forum on October 30 at 6:30 PM in the High School Auditorium so Ichabod parents, guardians and families have the opportunity to give their own feedback prior to final sequencing plan submission to NYSED.

An approximate timeline* for Phase II construction planning is:

  • December 2019: Sequencing Plan Documents submitted to NYS Education Dept. (NYSED) for approval
  • February 2020: NYSED sequencing plan approval
  • February/March 2020: Finalized Construction Documents for bidding purposes
  • April 2020: Construction bids awarded
  • End of June 2020: Phase II construction begins.

*Target dates for construction projects of this size can change depending on several factors. We will keep the community informed of any substantial date changes.

The pictures below aren’t the most exciting, but what they represent is. The temporary fencing that went up today is the first step in the construction of the connecting drive between the Primary School and the Middle School. Estimated to be completed in November 2019, the connecting drive will ensure a faster route around campus for transportation and any potential emergency vehicles.

Please note, bus drop-off and pick-up for the first half of the 2019-2020 school will not be affected by construction. We anticipate minor changes in the drop-off/pick-up at these schools after the 19-20 holiday break and will inform Ichabod Crane families of them with advance notice.

Repairs on the High School 100 Wing roof are underway this week!

(August 1, 2019)

Capital Project Architects – CSArch – gave a detailed presentation about the current Project status at the July 29, 2019, Board of Education meeting. Those unable to make it to this meeting can view the entire PowerPoint presentation as a PDF below:

Phase I of Construction

We are currently in Phase I of Construction. This phase includes the start and completion of two separate components of the Capital Project:

  1. Roof Replacement at Ichabod Crane High School 100 Wing. The construction bid contract for this component of the Capital Project was awarded to Henderson Johnson. The estimated completion date for this component is the end of Summer 2019.
      • Please note, the leaks in the High School Auditorium roof were repaired separately from the Capital Project since this roof was still under warranty.

  2. Connecting Drive Between Primary and Middle Schools. The construction bid contract for this component of the Capital Project was awarded to HMA Contracting Corp. Preliminary construction work on this component will begin during Summer 2019, but primary construction will take place from mid-September – November 2019
    • Bus drop-off and pick-up for the beginning of the 2019-2020 school will not be affected by this component of the Capital Project. We anticipate minor changes in the drop-off/pick-up at these schools after the 19-20 holiday break and will inform Ichabod Crane families of them with advance notice.

Of note is that costs for Phase I Construction came in approximately $200,000 under the pre-referendum projected estimates.

Phase II of Construction

From Summer-December 2019 Ichabod Crane Administration and Capital Project architects – CSArch – are determining the order of Phase II Construction, which has an estimated construction cycle of Summer 2020-Fall 2022.

After the Capital Project passed, several months were spent collaborating with all staff who will be impacted by future Project construction. This included a series of meetings and site visits with Ichabod Crane staff, administration and CSArch.

In the coming months, impacted staff, district administration and CSArch will determine the most cost-effective and least disruptive Phase II construction schedule during ongoing bi-weekly meetings. These bi-weekly meetings will continue throughout every phase of the Project through completion.

Upcoming Capital Project Public Presentations

CSArch will present on the current status of the Capital Improvement Project at the July 29 Special Board Meeting at 7 PM in the Ichabod Crane High School Library.
