(September 27, 2019)

Below is an update from the Ichabod Crane Board of Education summarizing the results of the feedback gathered from our community stakeholders through the online survey and focus group sessions.

Search consultants Drs. Ramming and Lawrence recently provided the Board with a summary of the feedback stakeholders contributed through the online survey and focus group sessions. The information we received will continue to help inform the Board in our decision-making process.

Over the course of four weeks, 296 respondents from various stakeholder groups completed the survey. On September 9th, 104 stakeholders participated in focus group input sessions.

In terms of the desired qualities, the feedback from stakeholders revealed that the next Superintendent must be a leader who:

  • Possesses a positive demeanor/attitude/outlook
  • Is engaging and has a strong presence in schools/community
  • Is committed to the school district and community vs using Ichabod Crane CSD as a stepping stone for their career
  • Has positive and purposeful interactions with internal and external stakeholders
  • Is an effective communicator and collaborator

The top five preferred skills and experiences stakeholders felt the next Superintendent should possess are:

  1. The ability to create a positive school culture
  2. The ability to clearly identify problems and develop effective solutions
  3. The desire to have a strong presence in the schools and community
  4. A commitment to involving others in decision-making
  5. A strong commitment to improving student achievements/student success

Collectively, stakeholders identified these four areas of focus for the next Superintendent:

  •  Student performance
  • Staff relations
  • Community relations
  • Budget and finance

It is anticipated that the brochure advertising the vacancy will be available digitally and in hardcopy the week of September 30th.

Board of Education

(August 12, 2019)

The following is a message from the Ichabod Crane Board of Education President, Matthew Nelson, about the current state of our superintendent search and how it’s progressed in the last few months.

One of the few explicit responsibilities of a School Board is the hiring and evaluation of a Superintendent. We take that responsibility very seriously.

Since late May, the ICC Board of Education has been hard at work on our efforts to identify the next Superintendent to Schools for the Ichabod Crane Central School District.

We created a subcommittee of three (3) Board Members who were tasked with leading our efforts in the search for a new Superintendent. The Board also created a group of district and community stakeholders to provide us with insight and input into the key characteristics of the next Superintendent. These stakeholders met in June, and in July the Board met to review their feedback and discuss our next steps.

In early July the District issued a Request for Proposals (RFP), seeking responses from individuals or firms interested in assisting with our search efforts. In late July several members of the Board met with four respondents to the RFP; they subsequently recommended to the full Board that we move to hire the Western New York Educational Service Council, located at the University of Buffalo, to assist us in our search efforts. The Board approved a motion in support of this recommendation at our meeting on July 29th.

On Monday evening (8/5), the Board met with their Service Council’s consultants, Drs. Thomas Ramming and Teresa Lawrence, to map out the superintendent search timeline and process. I am pleased to provide the community with this update.

The Board feels it is very important to obtain community input about the desired characteristics of the next superintendent and the challenges and opportunities that they will encounter.

To that end, an online survey will be posted here on August 15th and will remain available online until Friday, September 13th. We strongly encourage everyone, from all stakeholder groups, to respond and provide their input. Hardcopies will be available at each school building and the district’s central office. Everyone is encouraged to fill out a survey once.

Additionally, the consultants will be meeting with stakeholder focus groups on Monday, September 9th; more information on those meetings will be shared here shortly.

There will also be an open forum to which all community members are invited on the early evening of Monday, September 9th; again more information to follow.

The Board has carefully weighed the option of conducting an open versus a closed search. With an open search, the finalists are typically interviewed by a committee comprised of representatives from the community, parents, students and staff. In a closed search, the Board seeks stakeholder input with regard to the characteristics and qualifications for the next Superintendent of Schools and then works to ensure the confidentiality of the candidates while taking into account the input received by the stakeholders.

The Board wants to ensure that the search draws a very strong field of successful candidates and understands that confidentiality is critically important for highly successful candidates who do not want to jeopardize their current positions. Therefore, after thoughtfully and carefully deliberating the issue, the Board unanimously decided to conduct a closed search.

As such, it is imperative that community members and stakeholders respond to the survey. Stakeholders should speak with their representatives who will be meeting with the consultants on the 9th of September. We welcome everyone to the open session in the evening on this same day and encourage everyone to complete the online survey by September 13th.

Our goal is to appoint a new superintendent in December, with a tentative start date in January 2020.

Please check back here for ongoing updates.

If I can answer any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any other member of the Board.

Respectfully,
Matthew Nelson
President, ICC Board of Education
