Ichabod Crane Performing Arts Program Overview
The Ichabod Crane Central School Music Department is proud to offer a comprehensive program that promotes a love of music while teaching students to be independent musicians. K-8 General Music classes build music foundation skills through experiential learning and performance. Students in grades 5-12 have the opportunity to perform in a wide variety of vocal and instrumental ensembles. Select ensembles are available to students by audition. Additionally, courses in Music Theory allow the more dedicated musician to deepen their musical knowledge and gain a comprehensive, applicable understanding of how music functions.
Through participation in music at Ichabod Crane, students will learn life skills such as self-discipline, teamwork, reliability, positive self-expression, responsibility, and respect for both the art and their fellow musicians.
Ichabod Crane graduates have attended top music schools such as Manhattan School of Music, Ithaca College, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Fredonia, SUNY New Paltz, Bard Conservatory, Nazareth, Wagner, NYU, Hartwick, Berkley School of Music, Hartt School of Music, Schenectady Community College, East Carolina University, Shenandoah Conservatory, and the College of St. Rose. Graduates of ICC are now working in the fields of music performance, opera, musical theatre, music education, music business/management, music/audio production & recording, musical composition, and music therapy.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to one of the district’s music educators. We would love to talk to you about the program!

The Crane Acting Troupe was organized after two successful seasons of summer musical productions at Ichabod Crane. The Troupe is a self-supporting co-curricular activity open to students in grades 7 through 12 under the advisement of music and theatre teacher Gail Nadeem Helfer. Each year students in the Acting Troupe have the opportunity to attend workshops on auditioning skills, costuming, make-up, and stage crafts. Members of the Crane Acting Troupe are not only performers, but also technical staff and crew members interested in the many tasks associated with theatre, both onstage and backstage.
Community assistance is welcome and has been growing over the years, which provides an opportunity for the expertise of adults to be shared with the students.
Seniors have received the New York State Theatre Education Association’s ‘Certificates of Excellence’ in theatre. Several seniors have served as interns at the New York State Theatre Institute. Alumni of the Crane Acting Troupe have continued their studies in theatre, musical theatre, dance, arts administration, stage management, technical theatre, and scenic design. Recent graduates of these programs have obtained employment as a scenic painter for the Barter Theatre, stage manager for a national tour of Ragtime, stage manager for the Goodspeed Opera House, and ensemble member in the national tour of Ragtime.

See the New Marching Band Uniforms! (February 17, 2021)
Progress on the new Ichabod Crane Marching Band uniforms designed by FJM Uniforms is moving right along!
The sample uniform used to size our Marching Band/Color Guard students for their individual outfits recently arrived in the district and it looks amazing! We knew the uniforms would look great based on the concept sketch (scroll down to our original post for it) but seeing the fitting sample in person has exceeded our expectations! Below are two of our high school students trying on the sample uniform for their fittings. Thank you to Jeanne (right) and Bethany (left) for modeling the spiffy new uniform!
HS Band/Marching Band Director Is State Farm Teacher Assist Winner! (February 12, 2021)
We are pleased to announce that Ichabod Crane High School Band/Marching Band Director, Jennifer Edwards, was chosen as a New York State Farm Teacher Assist grant recipient! With the ongoing pandemic teachers around New York State have adapted teaching methods to meet these challenging times. State Farm’s Teacher Assist program grants each winning teacher $2,500 to implement those teaching methods and ideas in their schools.
Congratulations to Ms. Edwards’ winning proposal to benefit the band program! Out of the 200 submissions in New York State, Ms. Edwards’ proposal was one of only 40 Teacher Assist winners selected by the State Farm Review Committee! Thank you to State Farm for supporting New York State schools and Ichabod’s music program!

These Ichabod Middle School students will rehearse with professors and conductors, as well as work with an audio engineer to play in a virtual band of 167 talented young musician peers! Their performance will be live-streamed on March 6th, 2021.
Announcing New Marching Band & Color Guard Uniforms! (November 30, 2020)
We are excited to announce something exciting in the works for the Ichabod Crane Marching Band and Color Guard. This year they will be receiving new uniforms!
The concept art pictured is the new uniform for the Marching Band musicians, the concept art for our Color Guard students is still in the works. Thank you so much to FJM Uniforms for their beautiful work so far on designing the new uniforms!
The sample uniform based on the concept art is currently being made and will arrive in the district a few weeks from now. The next step from there is sizing our students for their individual uniforms and placing the final order. It will then be several months before all the final uniforms arrive in the district during the second half of the school year.
High School Students Qualify for All-State Music Festival (October 12, 2020)
Exciting things are happening in the music department at Ichabod Crane!
Although the annual All-State Music Festival will look different this year, the prestige of the ensembles, as well as the rigor of the process to be qualified, remains intact. Two seniors from the ICC Vocal Program have been selected this year:
- Erin Curry (Alto I, Mixed Chorus)
- Miah Nooney (Soprano II, Alternate)
In order to be selected for this group, students must participate in NYSSMA solo adjudication at the highest level, and receive a perfect/near perfect score. Congratulations to these outstanding musicians!
