Primary School Races to Read

(June 21, 2018) Race to Read roared into the Primary School Library the week of June 4th!  During this special program students enjoy stories read by special guest readers and then pick out a book to keep forever. We would like recognize all of our guest readers, including Sheriff Bartlett, and thank them for sharing their love of reading!  Additional thanks go to retired Primary School Principal Melissa Murray for ordering and organizing all the book orders for our students and to the ICC PTA for their continued generosity and support.

Celebrating the Second Grade Reading Challenge

(June 14, 2018) Second graders who finished the Ichabod Crane Explorers Club Reading Challenge celebrated their accomplishment with a pizza party in the library. Librarian Ms. Moss organizes the challenge each year to encourage the students to explore different types of books and use their library skills to navigate the library. Participants earn small prizes for each level they complete. Students who complete all 5 levels (46 books total) are invited to the pizza party. This program is supported by our generous ICC PTA. Great job, students!


Second Graders Work with Storyteller Tom Lee

(May 24, 2018) The Primary School's second grade students were captivated this week by professional storyteller Tom Lee.  He conducted daily workshops with each second grade class over a three-day period. The workshops focused on both storytelling and on visual thinking strategies.

Another Great Authors' Fair at the Primary School!

Passport Readers Challenge

The Passport Readers Challenge is for third grade students. Thirty students completed all 5 levels of this reading challenge and were invited to an ice cream party. Congratulations students!

PTA generously sponsors the library reading challenges; both the Passport Challenge for 3rd grade and the Explorer's Club Challenge for 2nd graders.

Save the Date: 'Invitations' Summer Program July 9 - Aug. 2

Ichabod Crane will offer the 'Invitations' summer program for qualifying Primary School students again this year. The dates are July 9 through August 2, Monday - Thursday. The 20-day academic program is designed to provide Language Arts and reading support to students in grades K-3 who may benefit from additional instruction in these areas as they enter the 2018-2019 school year. More information will be shared in the coming months.


Celebrating Chinese New Year

Ms. LaBrie’s and Ms. Erickson’s first grade class. recently celebrate the Chinese New Year. Special guests were Wei and Roger Gawboy, mother and brother of Meili Gawboy. They had authentic Chinese food and learned about how the Chinese New year is celebrated.


Third Grader Donates to Backpack Program

(March 23, 2018) Primary School third grader Tommy O'Neil made a very special donation to the Backpack Program. Instead of birthday gifts he used the money to buy food for the Backpack Program. He was given an award by Sandra Funk, who coordinates the program at the Primary School.

"This kid has a huge heart!" Funk said. "Thank you, Tommy!!"

Changes to Morning Drop Off Procedures Start February 26

(Feb. 13, 2018) Please note the change in morning drop off at the Primary School in effect February 26. Drop off will be at the back entrance to the Primary School from 8:30 - 8:50 am.

Please do not line up prior to 8:30 am. Anyone lining up prior to this time, will be rerouted to the Main parking lot in the designated area for visitors (color) to wait for the appropriate time.

Drop off is permitted only in designated area.

Parents are required to remain in the car at all times. A staff member will be there to assist your child.

Any one arriving after 8:50 am must use the Main Entrance in the front of the school

If you have any items to drop off for you student, they will be brought to the Main Entrance in the front of the school.

Author Visits the Primary School

(Dec. 21, 2017) On Monday, the Primary School welcomed award winning children's author Adam Lehrhaupt. Mr. Lehrhaupt's books are well loved by the students and they were excited to hear him speak about how he creates his characters and stories.

The author visit was coordinated by librarian Ms. Moss and generously funded by the ICC PTA Arts and Education program.

PTA Book Cart in Full Swing at Ichabod Crane Primary and Elementary Schools!


PTA Book Cart
(Sept. 2017) Once a week, students in grades K-5 can purchase new and gently used books for just $0.25 each. Also, all of our teachers are on the lookout for good behavior, and students can earn a coupon for a free book from the book cart. All proceeds are used to purchase new books throughout the year. 

Book cart hours are as follows:

Primary School
8:30am - 8:50 a.m.
Tuesdays: K-1
Thursdays: Grades 2-3

Elementary School
Fridays,  7:25 a.m. - 7:45 a.m.

Thank you to all that help make the PTA book cart successful in getting a book in the hands of our children.


First Grade Picnic

Primary School Gets New Outdoor Garden

(May 3, 2017) On April 28, representatives from TerraCycle, Toms of Maine and Hannaford helped install Ichabod Crane Primary School’s new outdoor garden made from recycled natural care waste products. The school won the most votes in the Tom’s of Maine and TerraCycle contest that was open to schools enrolled in the Hannaford Helps initiative. Learn More


Helping Hands - Donating to the Valatie Food Pantry

For several years, we at the Primary School have had a weekly collection for the Valatie Food Pantry to assist our friends in the community who may need a helping hand. It has been a huge success, and the Food Pantry counts on us to help keep their shelves full throughout the year!

Won't you please consider picking up an extra item or two each week to put in the collection box in the lobby? Pick up is every Friday! It's a great way to teach your child about generosity and helping others in our own community. View the flyer

About the Primary School

In addition to the regular K-3 curriculum, students participate in art, music, library, and physical education. The Health Office is staffed with a full-time registered nurse.

Students with special needs have a full compendium of service providers to assist them. These include speech and language therapists, counselors, and remedial reading teachers.

The Primary School is an active and enjoyable setting for the students. Parents are frequently involved as volunteers in their child's classroom and in other programs offered through the Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

Daily Hours: 8:50 a.m. - 3 p.m.
(Students can enter the building as early as 8:30 a.m.)
Office Hours: 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
